The University Hospital North Midlands Clinical Education Centre (CEC) in Stoke underwent a comprehensive refurbishment aimed at enhancing various areas, including two large seminar rooms, an A&E triage teaching space, and a student lounge and study area. Located near Newcastle-under-Lyme and Stoke-on-Trent, the project faced the challenge of maximizing existing space without additional expansion. A key requirement from the NHS Trust was to create a study environment reminiscent of Keele University's study spaces, aligning the Centre with Keele's medical department. This integration aimed to strengthen the Centre's educational ties and appeal. The project team takes pride in achieving a cohesive design with seating, colour schemes, and lighting that contribute to a bright, spacious, and modern atmosphere. The design emphasizes privacy for students, allowing them to concentrate in a calming environment insulated from external noise. Fitted seating with benches and comfortable contemporary furniture enhances the studying experience. Essential catering facilities were also provided to meet the students' refreshment needs, creating breakout spaces adjacent to the study areas.
Key aspects of the refurbishment included the creation of an A&E triage teaching space equipped with the latest medical training tools, and a student lounge and study area that offers a welcoming and conducive environment for learning. The student areas were designed to emulate the study environments of Keele University, incorporating similar design elements to foster a sense of continuity and familiarity for students. The refurbishment successfully transformed the Clinical Education Centre, aligning its aesthetics and functionality with the educational standards of both the NHS Trust and Keele University. This project not only enhanced the physical space but also reinforced the Centre’s role as a premier educational facility, supporting the development of future healthcare professionals in a state-of-the-art environment.
