One Essex Court

One Essex Court, Temple, London
The project involved the sensitive refurbishment of the ground and basement floors of One Essex Court, a prestigious Grade I listed building situated in the heart of Middle Temple. This historic building serves as the home for One Essex Court, a prominent set of commercial barristers’ chambers. Over time, the building had undergone various layout changes, prompting a meticulous restoration effort in collaboration with the Conservation Officer and English Heritage. HHA meticulously planned the refurbishment to honour the building's heritage while meeting contemporary functional needs. Key aspects of the refurbishment involved the strategic removal of partitions, coordinated with the conservation officer, to create a spacious, open-plan reception and waiting area. This transformation was designed to enhance accessibility and offer a welcoming environment for visitors. Additionally, the administration and clerks’ rooms were comprehensively refurbished and reorganized to optimize workflow and improve operational efficiency.
The project also encompassed a full refurbishment of the conference rooms, ensuring they met the high standards required for client meetings and legal proceedings. Ancillary spaces such as support rooms and facilities were also upgraded to ensure a similar standard was maintained throughout. Throughout the process, careful attention was paid to preserving and restoring the building’s architectural integrity and historical features. The refurbishment not only revitalized the interior spaces but also upheld the building’s status as a distinguished landmark within Middle Temple. In conclusion, the sensitive refurbishment of One Essex Court successfully blended heritage preservation with modern functionality, providing the barristers’ chambers with updated and efficient facilities while respecting the building's rich historical significance.
