London Nautical School, located in a Grade II listed building, underwent extensive renovations and expansions to accommodate a growing student body and enhance accessibility. The project included the construction of 20No. new classrooms and a modern Sports Hall with top-spec changing and storage facilities. Existing facilities were remodelled and repaired to improve functionality and aesthetic appeal. A notable design feature is the canopy on the second floor, resembling the chimneys of the Titanic, which adds a thematic touch to the school, particularly outside the Titanic Boardroom. The integration of Grade II listed elements into the expansion not only preserved the school’s historical significance but also distinguished it from others in the area.
Accessibility was a priority with the addition of a lift in the teaching wing, ensuring all students, including those with disabilities, have equal access to the school’s facilities. The project also included enhancements to outdoor areas, such as new paving on entrances and playgrounds, making them more accessible to everyone. The expansion project had a significant community impact by selling part of the school grounds for apartment development, thereby contributing to housing in central London and attracting more families to the area, subsequently increasing student enrolment. Overall, the London Nautical School expansion project successfully blended modern educational needs with the preservation of its historical architecture. It provided essential space for learning and recreational activities, fulfilling the school’s mission to offer ahigh-quality education in a supportive and accessible environment.
