Holly Lodge

Holly Lodge, Brocton, Staffordshire

Nestled on a charming plot backing onto Brocton Golf Course, the project for the client involved the creation of a new-build home designed to combine the modern elegance of an Arts and Crafts style with the practicalities of a future-proofed, lifetime residence. The vacant site presented an exciting opportunity to design a house that would meet the clients' aesthetic preferences while accommodating future needs. The primary challenge was to design a home that would include a ground-floor bedroom, ensuring it could adapt to accessibility requirements in the future. The solution was a timber frame construction, aligning with the clients' desire for natural materials like oak. The design features prominent oak elements, including window frames and detailed architectural touches, which contribute to the home’s cohesive and inviting appearance.

The site’s sloping nature required careful planning to ensure suitable access. A side elevation door was incorporated to facilitate wheelchair access, enhancing the home’s flexibility for future use. The rear elevation showcases elegant oak pillars and a balcony off the master bedroom, while the front façade is distinguished by a half-timber oak frame with herringbone brick pattern infill. The house was strategically positioned at the centre of the narrow, elongated site, allowing for a generous rear garden area that complements the overall design. The use of oak windows, detailed feature elements, brick render, and a plain clay tiled roof ensures that the home integrates seamlessly with the surrounding landscape and complements neighbouring properties ranging from Victorian to 1970s styles. Completed in the summer of 2004, the home reflects a thoughtful design that meets both the immediate and future needs of the clients. They are thrilled with their new residence, which offers them complete flexibility and a beautiful space enhanced by their own gardening and landscaping skills. Their satisfaction with the project was evident when they invited us back to capture the completed home in photos.
