HHA previously completed a project to convert barns located on the outskirts of the Chillington Estate in South Staffordshire. This development transformed 4No. brick barn structures into bespoke residential dwellings, offering stunning views of the Staffordshire landscape and located within close proximity to the historic Chillington Hall. The Gunstone Farmstead, part of the Chillington Estate, underwent repair and renovation to retain its traditional character while creating marketable dwellings. The original application required maintaining the agricultural grouping of buildings to complement the main farmhouse, including separate independent vehicular access. A main challenge of the scheme was balancing the preservation of the barns' historic appearance with the creation of functional and appealing homes. Each accommodation was designed for ease of accessibility, with two dwellings featuring ground-floor bedroom accommodation.
Key features of the project included extensive use of traditional oak timber joinery, utilizing all original barn door and window openings, and retaining remnants of former machinery, brackets, and pulleys both internally and externally. These elements ensured the dwellings retained their historical charm and authenticity. The conversion saved and preserved the overall Gunstone Farmstead for future generations, contributing to the wider Chillington Estate and the neighbouring village of Codsall. This project brought otherwise redundant agricultural buildings back into use, fostering a new population in the agricultural area. The design received praise from District Councillors, the Planning Committee, and the current occupants, who developed the site and now enjoy living there. The development was intended for use by a single family, the owner, his three grown-up children, and their families—providing them with the opportunity to live and grow up in the open countryside. Upon visiting, post completion, the family expressed their enjoyment of living in the newly converted dwellings. The project preserves the heritage of Gunstone Farmstead and contributes to the community's vitality.
