Good Hope Paediatrics Emergency Department

Good Hope Hospital - Paediatrics Emergency Department, Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham
Our team was tasked with designing and delivering a state-of-the-art Paediatrics Emergency Department at Good Hope Hospital, addressing the pressing demands of the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The project involved a single-storey extension seamlessly connected to the main A&E Entrance/Reception area. The new extension houses eight additional cubicles, a triage bay, a resuscitation room, as well as clean and dirty utilities and storage rooms, ensuring the facility is fully equipped to meet the needs of young patients. Internally, significant reconfiguration was undertaken within the existing building to enhance the patient experience. This included the creation of a dedicated entrance from the main reception/waiting area for children, which lead to a separate waiting area, a new reception area, a disabled accessible toilet, and a well-being room. To create a welcoming and comforting environment for children, we incorporated an exciting colour palette and feature ceiling bulkheads.
A dedicated blue light ambulance entrance and turning area were also introduced to facilitate emergency services, ensuring quick and efficient access for critical cases. These new facilities empower the Trust to manage current and future demands more effectively, allowing the main Emergency Department to focus on broader emergencies while providing specialized care for paediatric patients. To meet the tight programme, we employed modern methods of construction, avoiding traditional wet trades. The feedback from clinical users and the Trust’s Capital/Estates team has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the project's success in delivering an excellent patient experience and enhancing the hospital's capacity to serve its community.
