Emanuel School Refectory

Emanuel School Refectory, Battersea, London
HHA undertook the project to enhance dining facilities at Emanuel School in Wandsworth with the construction of a new dining hall extension. This addition now offers students a bright and contemporary dining experience overlooking the school’s sports pitches. During warmer months, sliding-folding doors along the south façade can be fully opened, seamlessly extending the dining area onto an external paved terrace. The design of the extension emphasizes integration and continuity with the existing pavilion building and school hall. It features white painted timber cladding and pre-patinated copper roofing, maintaining a harmonious aesthetic with neighbouring structures. The architectural form and detailing of windows, doors, and cladding are deliberately minimal and precise, contributing to the extension's contemporary clarity.
Functionally, the new dining hall provides ample space for students to dine comfortably while enjoying views of the outdoors. The flexibility of the sliding-folding doors enhances usability, allowing for an adaptable dining environment that can accommodate varying weather conditions and student preferences throughout the year. Overall, the project highlights HHA’s ability to create modern educational environments that prioritize both functionality and architectural coherence. By seamlessly integrating the new dining hall extension with existing school facilities and enhancing usability with outdoor connectivity, Emanuel School now boasts a sophisticated dining space that enhances the overall campus experience for students and staff alike.
