This restoration project at Chillington Hall focused on a comprehensive strategy initiated at the turn of the millennium, aiming to preserve and enhance this historically significant building. Acritical aspect of this endeavour was the restoration of the lantern above the Saloon, which was identified as needing repair during a Condition Survey undertaken by HHA. This restoration not only addressed structural issues but also facilitated broader improvements aimed at reinstating the Saloon to its original design by Sir John Soane. Key enhancements included upgrading the Saloon's lighting and extending a harmonious colour scheme into the Front Hall to complement the restored interior of the Saloon. Victorian additions, such as a dado rail, were removed to align with Soane's original vision.
The project also encompassed meticulous restoration work on the chimneypiece, re-graining of doors, shutters, and skirtings, and gilding of column capitals, ensuring authenticity and historical accuracy throughout. The excellence of the restoration efforts was recognized with the prestigious Historic Houses Association and Sotheby's Restoration Award, underscoring the project's success in preserving Chillington Hall's architectural heritage and enhancing its aesthetic appeal. This accolade highlights the dedication to craftsmanship and conservation principles that guided the restoration, ensuring that Chillington Hall continues to inspire and captivate visitors with its restored splendour and historical significance.
